Latest company case about Application Areas of Zirconia-Alumina

Application Areas of Zirconia-Alumina

Zirconia-alumina (zirconium corundum) is primarily used in two major sectors: refractories and abrasives. Refractory applications represent its most critical use—it is indispensable in the glass industry—while its high hardness makes it an ideal material for manufacturing heavy-duty grinding wheels.

🏭 Refractories

This is the primary and most high-end application for zirconia-alumina, leveraging its resistance to high temperatures and corrosion.

Glass Furnaces: This is the most classic application for zirconia-alumina bricks. They are used in the areas of glass melting furnaces most susceptible to severe corrosion—such as the melting tank, the metal line (glass-line), furnace dams, and throat channels—effectively resisting erosion by molten glass. These products are used in furnaces across various sectors, including photovoltaic glass, construction materials, automotive glass, and consumer glassware.

Iron, Steel, and Metallurgy: Zirconia-alumina is used to manufacture critical refractory components, such as nozzles and flow channels, for continuous casting and rolling processes in the steel industry. It is also employed in industrial furnaces within the chemical and metallurgical sectors, specifically in areas exposed to corrosive solutions.

Specialized Foundry Coatings: Used as a raw material for foundry coatings, it is particularly well-suited for the casting of specialty steels, including high-alloy steel, stainless steel, and high-manganese steel.

Hazardous Waste Disposal: High-density chrome-zirconia-alumina bricks are specifically designed for use in rotary kilns for hazardous waste disposal, taking advantage of their superior resistance to corrosion, penetration, and wear.

⚙️ Abrasives and Grinding Tools

This application utilizes the high hardness and excellent toughness (along with good self-sharpening properties) of zirconia-alumina.

Heavy-Duty Grinding Wheels: As a premium abrasive, it is used to produce high-performance, heavy-duty grinding wheels, making it highly effective for grinding steel components, cast iron, heat-resistant steel, and various alloy materials.

Coated Abrasives: It is used in the production of coated abrasives, helping to enhance both the precision and efficiency of grinding and polishing operations.

Additionally, zirconia-alumina can serve as an aggregate in the production of high-strength, lightweight castables and lightweight refractory bricks.
